Foreign owner’s illegal shop bulldozed

While the fight against land invasion continues, the DA Shadow MMC for Community Development and Ward 114 PR councillor, Belinda Echeozonjoku, reported that a shop on invaded land had been demolished.

South Africa may be a country for everyone who lives in it, but it certainly doesn’t mean anyone can do as they please.

Zandspruit in Ward 114 is one of many areas with prevalent cases of land grabs, which give law-enforcement agencies sleepless nights.

While the fight continues, the DA Shadow MMC for Community Development and Ward 114 PR councillor, Belinda Echeozonjoku, reported that a shop on invaded land had been demolished.

“During my informal oversight to my allocated ward, Zandspruit, community members told me about a Somali shop owner, who already has other shops in the community, building a big shop on invaded land,” she said.

After she was requested to inspect the brick structure, “I promptly reported it to JMPD. I would like to thank Superintendent Wandile Mrubata for listening to the plea from the community, and ensuring that this illegal shop on invaded land was demolished,” said Belinda.

She went on to highlight the critical shortage of housing in Zandspruit. “We have a large number of residents waiting for housing allocations in this community, but a shop being built in full sight on invaded land is complete lawlessness,” she criticised, as she imagined the volatility this act could have caused, hadn’t it been given the urgent attention it deserved.
