Ending off the school term in a cloud of colour

On one of the last days of school until after the Easter Weekend, learners from Laerskool Die Ruiter Primary ended off the school term in colourful chaos.

Laerskool Die Ruiter Primary was a colourful chaos on Monday morning, 16 March as learners and teachers enjoyed the school’s annual colour run.

After having been postponed from last week Friday (13 March) due to load-shedding and poor weather conditions, the 9am festivities ensured that teachers and learners started off their week in high spirits.

Once a year, teachers from the school organise the colour run as a way for the learners to wind down as the school term nears its end. Each learner paid a small fee and was given six bags of coloured powder to throw at each other, and at a few teachers, as they ran around the field.

The children’s joyous laughter and shouts filled the air as they enjoyed the morning without school work. Powder was flying everywhere in a colourful cloud, but no one seemed to mind.

When all the learners had thrown the last of their powder, they lined up at a cluster of tables. As their Grades were called, each one received a hot dog as a snack. A small flea market was also set up so that the learners could buy bubbles and a few small toys if they wanted to, and the school’s tuck shop was also open for those whose hunger couldn’t be satisfied by the hot dogs.

Jumping castles and inflatable soccer fields were set up on the main sports field where the colourful learners could exert the rest of their energy and hang out with their friends for the remainder of the morning.

A few concerned parents kept their children at home because of concerns relating to the Coronavirus, but the learners who were at the colour run seemed to think that it wasn’t a bad way to spend what would be one of the last days of school for while.
