JMPD Officer found guilty of animal abuse

Perpetrator give a sentence of R6000 or six months in prison

When fighting a battle against darkness the rare moments of light serve as inspiration to persevere. The Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA’s crusade for those who have no voice yielded a positive result on Thursday, 5 March.

A JMPD officer pleaded guilty in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court to six charges of animal abuse. The officer had chained two dogs to a slab of cement in her back yard. The chains were reportedly two metres in length, leaving the dogs with no other place to expel waste. They were found lying in their own filth, and infested with ticks and fleas.

SPCA inspector Eric Taljaard described the scene at the property as “totally disgusting” and the report from the veterinarian revealed the shocking condition of the dogs. They were reported to have ulcerated callouses on their hips and knees, dry blood from fly strike, muscle loss due to starvation and sever dehydration. Both dogs were confiscated.

Pleading guilty earned the officer a R6 000 fine or six months in prison. Manager of the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA, Mandy Cattanach, encouraged the public to report animal abuse saying, “We will catch abusers and we will prosecute them. If anyone witnesses animal abuse they must please let us know as soon as possible. Take as many photos and videos as you can, because the more evidence we have the more chance we have of getting justice for the animals.”
