Women fight back through 50km walk from Clearwater

'This 50km walk is for women in their 70s and 80s who were raped 50 years ago and never felt free to speak out.'

Leilani Kuter is well known for her courageous walks aimed at raising funds for different organisations that render services to rape and gender-based violence victims.

On 7 March, as part of supporting Project Namuhla, she will be walking 50km from Clearwater Mall to the Cradle of Humankind in support of the SA Women Fight Back petition that will be handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa on 6 March.

“This 50km walk is for women in their 70s and 80s who were raped 50 years ago and never felt free to speak out. Since my 2019 walk, I have decided to do dedication walks, meaning I am walking for other survivors. So far I have done a 35km, 30km, 28km and a 12km walk for four different survivors,” said the ever-smiling Leilani.

Leilani finished a 729km walk in 2019 that enabled her to raise R250 000, which she donated to six different organisations serving rape and gender-based violence victims.

This year marks 28 years of survival after she was brutally raped and left for dead on 16 September 1992.

According to Leilani, speaking out and sharing her story to inspire other victims to live their lives have been a big part of her healing in the wake of her horrifying ordeal.

Leilani said, “Supporting Project Namuhla gives me the opportunity to help to give a voice to the voiceless. I have done many dedications walks for women.”

Her goal is to raise R50 000 towards her NPO, Yellow For Survivors Fund which she founded to provide financial aid to organisations that dedicate their time to improving the lives of rape survivors.

The community is urged to rally behind Leilani and make a difference by donating to this walk from Clearwater Mall.

The public is welcome to email leilani@yellowforsurvivors.co.za or call 071 883 3346 should they have any questions or want to make an offline donation.

The offline donation will be added to the barometer and companies will get a section 18A certificate from the selected NGOs.
