Mass Florida outage due to arson at switching station

City Power issued an update at 1.39pm, stating that technicians were on scene.

A power outage occurred in a large part of Florida and surroundings areas on Wednesday morning, 4 March due to a fire at the switching station on the corner of Fieldhouse Street and Second Avenue in Florida.

According to Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services were on scene to extinguish the fire. The switching station was handed over to City Power whose technicians assessed the damage.

He added that it seemed that the switching station had been vandalised, and that several wires and relays had been vandalised or stolen.

City Power issued an update at 1.39pm, stating that technicians were on scene. The damage is quite extensive and City Power has appointed a contractor to attend to the outage which will take some time.

No estimated time of restoration was given. It is not clear yet what had caused the fire.
