Performing artist off to grace the Big Apple’s runway

'"I think one of the greatest aspects of being a good actress is to discipline yourself. Being a good person is just as important as being a good actor.'

The 19-year old modelling and acting phenomenon, Yvonne Mookapele, is living her ultimate dream. This year she is aiming for the Big Apple.

Since Grade 3 the Gauteng born and bred performer has been taking part in a variety of activities, including walking the runway. “In primary school I used to be a choir leader, an acting coach to my fellow classmates and a dance group leader,” she added.

At the age of 17, Yvonne completed her Media Concepts course in Television Presenting at The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), and completed her part-time acting courses in 2018 at the Market Theatre, majoring in monologues, scenes and ensemble work. Her voice has been heard many times over the radio and her face has been seen on screen as one of the presenters.

“In 2019 I was scouted by Elizabeth Janse van Rensburg, an International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS) talent scout, to audition for the IATS. I auditioned in the modelling and acting categories in front of the phenomenal Director of 33 and Me Talent Agency, producer of the IATS, Elsubie Verlinden, and the Director of Admissions for IATS, Eloïse Janse van Rensburg,” she explained.

After receiving the good news, she made her way to the national championships in October last year to represent Gauteng. She had the honour of performing in front of the international scout, Joey Hunter, co-founder of Ford Models in New York City; Rhavynn Drummer, Casting Director at Tyler Perry Studios; Nate Bulter from America’s Got Talent; and Blaze Johnson from The Voice America. “I got an official callback to represent South Africa at the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) showcase in New York City in July this year,” she continued.

She has been working hard ever since the announcement to prepare for the upcoming show. She attended the International Boot Camp Course where she gained knowledge and experience in the field, and which gave the participants an insight into what the industry requires of such an artist. “We even had the greatest pleasure of being taught by Tsholo Phiri. the presenter of Expresso TV show for Media training. After boot camp I’m more determined. I want to get in contact with media houses to apply the knowledge gained before going to New York to represent SA,” she confidently stated.

Although modelling and acting are dear to her, she also takes the time to dance, direct photoshoots, and enjoys her occasional swim. “I think one of the greatest aspects of being a good actress is to discipline yourself. Being a good person is just as important as being a good actor. And the greatest aspects of being a good model is to be on time, be professional, and be thankful,” she concluded.
