Ten men remain in custody while facing charges of mass murder

A late afternoon argument turned into a gruesome mass murder in Matholesville roughly four weeks ago. Ten men brutally beat a group of Lesotho nationals to death on Friday, 31 January over illegal mining operations in the area.

Illegal firearms recovered after shootout at Maraisburg mine

Police launched a massive manhunt and within two weeks they had the suspects in handcuffs. After a shootout with the suspects, police arrested eight men and a further two who had been shot in the altercation on Wednesday 12 February. The suspects where held in custody and on Monday, 24 February they made their first appearance in front of a magistrate.

The men were refused bail and the matter will be moved to the High Court due to the severity of the crime. Public Prosecutor Paseka Temeki confirmed, “The case has been remanded until 25 March to be heard in the High Court”. The ten suspects will remain behind bars while the justice system takes its course. Updates will be published accordingly.
