Children exchange recycling collections for toys

On the same day hundreds of sanitary pads packs were handed out.

Saturday, 22 February saw children from various informal settlements take part in the Charity Begins With Me recycling initiative where they got to exchange their recycling collections for toys, books and stationery.

All the recycling materials that were collected on the day were donated to the local waste pickers to promote a visible change in the community.

“We desperately need toys, stationery, children’s books, water bottles, sweets, caps, puzzles or games to keep this project going.

“Please ask your kids to clean out those toy rooms and donate what they no longer need.

“I will clean, organise, sort, pack, sharpen, and distribute to children who cannot afford to buy their own,” said the founder of Charity Begins With Me, Stephan Ferreira.

Each month Stephan and a few friends select a big project or two, and collect various items that they can use to make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most.

On Saturday, hundreds of sanitary pads packs were handed out. “Condoms are free while sanitary pads are not. I strongly feel that they should be, as so many women cannot afford to buy this and often girls have to skip school,” explained Stephan.

Those who would like to sponsor a pack or two are advised to contact Stephan via SMS or WhatsApp on 072 593 3866.

The main drop-off point is in Fairland daily from 5pm to 7pm. Alternative drop-offs can also be arranged. People can even send their donations via PostNet if they would like to help but live far away, or place an order via Pick n Pay online and they will deliver directly.

Charity Begins With Me will be hosting a township beading workshop in March and are appealing once again to the public to assist with any beads and buttons that are no longer in use.

“A very special thank you to Thokozile and our new friends at The Glass Recycling Company for helping out today and for donating 200 food parcels for our recycling project,” said a highly grateful Stephan.
