At approximately 9.50am today, 28 February, a motorist who was stopped at the intersection of Hendrik Potgieter Road and Rhinoceros Avenue in Weltevreden Park noticed smoke and small flames coming from the bonnet of his car.

The driver of the red Toyota Corolla was waiting at the traffic light to turn right when he noticed the flames. Within minutes the car was engulfed and nothing could be done to save it.

As a member of the Florida Community Policing Forum (CPF), the driver immediately called the organisation for assistance. Initially, fire extinguishers were used to try and tame the flames, but the responders were getting nowhere. The fire department arrived and were able to put out the fire, but nothing that was left inside could be saved.

Luckily the driver managed to grab a few personal items before the fire completely encompassed the car and no one was hurt. The car was completely destroyed, inside and out. Even though no one was injured, ER 24 was still on scene to make sure the motorist was okay.
