Crime is picking up following December holidays

Jacobs also touched on the increase in theft out of vehicles at parkruns and school events, urging event organisers to beef up security.

The Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, 12 February to highlight problems relating to crime in the area.

The crime report submitted by the Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager, Captain Karen Jacobs painted a concerning picture as various crimes had shown an increase.

With the December and early January crime rates relatively low in the police’s books, Jacobs expressed concern about a spike in criminal activity in February.

She reported that house break-ins were quiet from December to January, attributing the latest incidents to people returning after the holidays. “We had two townhouse robberies; in both incidents the door or a window was opened,” she said, warning homeowners to look into this problem.

House robberies also saw an increase, and the cause was attributed to the negligence of domestic workers, and load-shedding. “Make sure you have security measures in place in case of load-shedding. Check your batteries,” she advised.

She also reminded homeowners to keep a contact list of their security providers in case they experience a network glitch while calling the station. “Remember the police also work on a Telkom number; when there’s a network failure, it affects us as well,” she cautioned.

Jacobs also touched on the increase in theft out of vehicles at parkruns and school events, urging event organisers to beef up security.

Street robberies on Peter Road, which is a result of the area being a student hub, are also a problem.

Jacobs warned about fake news on social media, urging people to refrain from copying and pasting information that is not verified.

The new chairperson, Nicus Durieux pleaded with the community to volunteer as CPF patrollers. He stressed that Sector 3 is one of the biggest sectors in Honeydew and requires more patrollers. He added that the current patrollers are stretched out and most of them come from other sectors, which is unfair to them.
