Three Allen Glen High learners suspended following assault and stabbing incident

With bullying, violence and intimidation being rife at schools, Mabona said the Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, relentlessly urges principals and educators to respond appropriately when these incidents are reported.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed the suspension of three Allen Glen High School Grade 9 learners who have been implicated in the assault and stabbing of another learner on 10 February.

GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona indicated that the school will conduct an internal disciplinary hearing against the alleged perpetrators on Wednesday, 19 February 2020 at 6pm, where appropriate sanction will be recommended. He added that the affected parents will be kept informed throughout the process and psychosocial support will be provided to the victim and the perpetrators.

The victim in question is a Grade 10 learner who was brutally assaulted and subsequently stabbed after being accused of theft by a fellow learner and member of an alleged notorious gang. A video posted with our initial article depicts all the chaos during the fight.

The accusation, according to the witness, related to a bag of dagga, which allegedly had fallen from the gang member’s pocket.

However, according to GDE’s preliminary investigations, the scuffle was as a result of [the so-called aggressor] selling stick sweets.

“According to our preliminary investigations, the allegations of any dagga, drug dealings or gangsterism at the said school were unfounded,” said Mabona.

Nevertheless, the boy apparently was stabbed in his leg and torso. Mabona confirmed that the boy was taken to Life Flora Clinic. “The victim was kept in hospital overnight and discharged the following day,” he said.

With bullying, violence and intimidation being rife at schools, Mabona said the Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, relentlessly urges principals and educators to respond appropriately when these incidents are reported.

“Ignoring these reports makes the victim feel more vulnerable and subjected to secondary trauma by adults who show a cavalier attitude,” he explained.

When analysing the cause of ill discipline among learners, Mabona identified parental neglect, absent fathers, strain on single-parent families, child-headed families and unfavourable conditions in communities as the biggest contributors.

Among the efforts to eradicate the scourge, Mabona said the GDE is implementing programmes such as parenting workshops; incapacitating SGBs and principals on the disciplinary procedures for learners; partnerships with Social Development and Community Safety and related NGOs; camps during school holidays; and tours of prisons.

This is a developing story.
