Police throughout Gauteng continued their positive start to 2020 with another province-wide crackdown on criminal activity on the weekend of 9 February. The police confirmed over 780 arrests across all stations, with over 130 of them coming from the West Rand,.

A total of 14 unlicensed firearms were recovered with seven of them being found in Kagiso, Randfontein and Westonaria. The arrested suspects will appear in Johannesburg and Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Courts soon.

Almost 40 illegal immigrants were arrested in the West Rand District alone, with the remaining arrests being made for various crimes ranging from housebreaking, possession of drugs, assault, and driving under the influence. Several men wanted in connection with rape cases were among those arrested.

Captain Makhubela issued a stern message saying, “Police will continue to conduct the operation as a strong warning to those criminals who are hiding within our communities and who think they are untouchable. Police visibility will still be intensified at hot spots to protect the communities of Gauteng.”
