Outcome of Gauteng Department of Education’s meeting at Roodepark School

All boys involved set to face disciplinary hearing

The Gauteng Department of Education met with the Principal of Roodepark School regarding an alleged assault on Monday, 3 February. In the marathon meeting the GDE examined CCTV footage of the incident, which identified three learners responsible for the altercation.

The boy originally identified as the chief aggressor was suspended and will face a School Governing Body Disciplinary Committee hearing on 10 February. The GDE also found though that the two other boys involved in the incident should face similar consequences. “It was recommended that the other two learners must also be charged accordingly,” said GDE spokesperson, Steve Mabona.

Commenting on the role of the staff in handling the incident, Mabona said, “Teachers were present in and around the school but unfortunately this terrible incident happened in split seconds. We are investigating circumstances surrounding the administration of this incident from all relevant role players.”

The police are investigating two cases of assault – one opened by the family of the boy who was hospitalised, and the other opened by the family of his assailant. Mabona noted with regret the circumstances surrounding the incident saying, “Indeed, this is an unfortunate incident, especially that this is a school for learners with special needs”.
