Armed robbery outside bank in Horison Park

Security guard shot after elderly man targeted

Opportunistic crime is the hardest to guard against and the least expected. In some cases, it is impossible to avoid carrying large amounts of cash for even the shortest distances. An elderly man doing just that was the victim of a robbery at a bank just off Ontdekkers Road on Wednesday, 29 January.

The man arrived at the bank after withdrawing money from another bank just a few hundred metres away at Horizon View Shopping Centre. Unbeknown to him, four armed men in a silver Toyota Corolla had followed him into the bank’s parking lot. According to an eye-witness account, two of the men exited the car and robbed the man, making off with his wallet and cash.

A security guard in the parking lot attempted to intervene but was shot in the upper thigh at close range. Other security guards on site hurled bricks at the escaping men, causing their vehicle to swerve and strike the curb. The Corolla sustained a flat tyre but the men continued their getaway with no regard for their vehicle’s condition. The elderly victim was unharmed and the injured security guard was taken to hospital. His supervisor confirmed though that he was doing fine as he was conscious and even smiling.

Police were unavailable for comment, but officers were on scene and have taken the victim’s statement for investigation.
