Krushing the new school year

Roodepoort Primary School learners are given the confidence to conquer the world one step at a time thanks to Clover Krush.

According to statistics released by Stats SA, approximately 70 per cent of learners walk to school every day. Many of these learners do so either barefoot or with badly worn-out shoes.

As a part of their Krush Goodness initiative, Clover Krush has been donating Smart Steps school shoes to learners all around South Africa.

In 2020, the initiative is aiming to reach 20 000 school children nationally, and on Monday, 20 January, the Krush Goodness Krew stopped at Roodepoort Primary School.

With the help of their celebrity guest, Dineo Langa, Clover Krush donated over 1 000 pairs of brand-new school shoes that morning. The project is hoping to make a sustainable difference in the lives of all the learners they reach. A mantra spread by the group is that they are giving the learners the confidence to conquer the world one step at a time.

The learners from the Davidsonville-based school gathered in the school’s courtyard bright and early, excited to see what all the speakers and banners were for. Each of the learners was dressed immaculately in their red school uniforms, their faces adorned with curiosity and happiness.

The Krush Goodness Krew started the day by introducing themselves and getting all the learners into an interactive mood with songs, dances and games. A small play was put on before the Clover Krush mascot bounced his way to the front of the group and put on a show for the young learners.

All the cheering and excitement from the warm-up entertainment were no match for the screams of praise when Dineo stepped in front of the crowd. The singer, actress, and TV producer greeted the learners and teachers with just as much enthusiasm, expressing her gratitude for the initiative and explaining why it is so close to her heart.

In an interview with Clover Krush, Dineo referred to the project as a new beginning for the learners. She went on to tell a story from her childhood, remembering how she felt when she got new school shoes. “There was always a sense of pride when I walked onto the playground on the first day in my new school shoes,” she explained. “I couldn’t wait to show them off to my friends.”

To reach their target of donating 20 000 pairs of school shoes this year, the Krush Goodness Krew will be visiting 20 schools in partnership with Smart Steps by Novita Shoes. The Clover Krush team explained their partnership saying, “In addition to being Proudly South African, Smart Steps shoes are strong, reliable, tough and comfortable – the ideal shoe for young learners.”
