Councillor rejects ‘bribe’ from suspects’ lawyer

Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester, who has been following the matter very closely since opening a case against them, said the defence attempted to lure her into settling the matter out of court.

The five men arrested for malicious damage to City-owned property last year will soon be standing trial.

The suspects reappeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 27 January, but their hearing was again postponed, this time to 18 February for the copies of the dockets to be prepared for their newly appointed attorneys.

Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester, who has been following the matter very closely since opening a case against them, said the defence attempted to lure her into settling the matter out of court.

“The Defence Attorney proposed that I withdraw the case, take a payment from the accused, which I then give to the City. I refused to stand down,” she said, viewing the proposal as an attempt to bribe her.

These suspects were arrested for illegally affixing heavy steel structures to the Golf Club Terrace bridge in Constantia Kloof in October 2019 – an act which would have ended in tragedy.
