Dog poisoning on the rise again – Here are the steps you can take

Albicarb paralyses all the muscles and leads to a traumatic death

Reports have once again been received of dogs being poisoned in the Roodepoort area with one dog being poisoned in Leeukop Street, Witpoortjie, and another resident finding poison on his property in van Alkmaar Street.

Criminal’s favourite poison to use is Temik, better known as Two-step, which contains Albicarb. Albicarb paralyses all the muscles and leads to a traumatic death. Two-step is black/grey granular substance and is usually put in meat or bread and thrown over the perimeter wall.

The Roodepoort Police have previously urged the public to open a case if their dog is poisoned, saying that the owner of the dog should go to the police station and insist on opening a case.

Symptoms that your dog has been poisoned:

• Profuse twitching of the skin

• Disorientation

• Excessive bronchial secretion, i.e. coughing up slime

• Excessively runny nose

• Hypersalivation

• Hyperventilation

• Restlessness

• Weakness

• Somnolence

• Lethargy

• Difficulty breathing

• Anxiety

• Nervousness

• Convulsions

• Seizures

• Diarrhoea: may be mucous or may be black

• Abnormal pupils – either pinpoint or dilated

• Abdominal pain

• Tremors and muscle twitching

• Temporary or partial paralysis, partial loss of movement

• Unconsciousness

• Coma

Personal Safety:

• Avoid contact with saliva, bodily fluids or other excrements.

• Wear gloves.

• Your dog is in distress and might show signs of aggression, thus be careful.

• Do not put your finger inside its mouth for it might bite.

Immediate Treatment:

• Keep the dog warm with a blanket.

• Check the yard thoroughly for more poisoned bait.

• Get your dog to the vet immediately – many dogs die within 20 minutes.
