Residents and recyclers team up and clean up

The collected non-recyclable rubbish was then loaded onto the ARO truck and transported to the nearby dump.

Residents of Constantia Kloof Northside (CKN) in partnership with Recyclers and African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) held a community clean-up along Hendrik Potgieter Road on Saturday, 9 November.

Organiser, Lorin Leuci said, “A large majority of our recyclers showed up to help with the organised clean-up along the main road and we collected 30 refuse bags of non-recyclable rubbish that had been dumped at the side of the roadway. We have no idea where it came from, but we know our recyclers did not dump it there.”

The collected non-recyclable rubbish was then loaded onto the ARO truck and transported to the nearby dumpsite.

Lorin said, “Recyclers gave up their Saturday morning and walked from afar to clean up the mess they did not make. They did it for the love of our integration project. Honestly, my biggest takeaway is that residents can learn from recyclers.”

The recyclers demonstrated the true spirit of community and passionately participated in all the activities. They did not ask for anything; they seemed grateful to be recognised for the grossly underrated service they provide to communities at no charge.

“I love spending time with them. There are many skills among them and we are learning new ones together,” Lorin said.
