Today in history: Desiré Randall Wilson is born

Desiré is one of only five women to have competed in Formula One racing.

On 26 November 1953, former racing driver Desiré Randall Wilson was born in Brakpan (East Rand).

Desiré is one of only five women to have competed in Formula One racing. In 1980 she won the Formula One race at Brands Hatch in the British Aurora F1 series.

The win made her the only woman to ever hold the Formula One title. She also competed in cart and sports car racing.

She is married to road course architect, Alan Wilson and still occasionally races at the Goodwood Revival.

Her life as a racing driver has been documented in a book titled, Driven by Desire.
