When thunder roars, go indoors!

South African Weather Services announced on 20 November that the whole of Gauteng would be placed on weather watch due to possible thunderstorms, strong winds, flooding, tornadoes and hail.

Rain has been predicted for today, 21 November, with the warning of an 80 per cent chance for developing thunderstorms in the afternoon from 4pm until late night, and flooding due to heavy rainfall.

• Friday, 22 November – Partly cloudy skies with an 80 per cent chance of thunderstorms and a wind speed of 18km/h. A maximum temperature of 27°C and a minimum of 15°C are predicted.

• Saturday, 23 November – Partly cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 28°C and a minimum of 18°C. A wind speed of 30km/h is expected with a 50 per cent chance of severe thunderstorms.

• Sunday, 24 November – Cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 31°C and a minimum of 18°C, and a 70 per cent chance for thunderstorms, with a wind speed of 20km/h.

• Monday, 25 November – Mostly sunny skies with the temperature reaching a maximum of 31°C and a minimum of 21°C. A wind speed of 20km/h is expected with a 10 per cent chance of thunderstorms developing in the late afternoon.

• Tuesday, 26 November – Partly cloudy skies with a 55 per cent chance of showers and developing thunderstorms. A maximum temperature of 29°C and a minimum of 21°C with a wind speed of 20km/h are expected.

• Wednesday, 27 November – Mostly sunny skies with a maximum temperature of 30°C and a minimum of 21°C, and a wind speed of 17km/h.

• Thursday, 28 November – Mostly sunny skies are expected with a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 20°C, and a wind speed of 15km/h.

The SAWS has released the following thunderstorm safety measures:

– Don’t seek shelter in isolated sheds, under trees, telephone or power lines, near an electricity box or on hilltops.

– It is safe in a stable building, away from water, away from windows or in a car, if there is no other place.

– If you are stuck outside during a thunderstorm, find the lowest point and crouch down.

– When you are on the road, try to pull over at your nearest under-cover garage or parking lot. Turn on your lights, reduce your speed and increase your following distance.
