Today in history: Biker is caught doing 284km/h

On the morning of 20 November 2005, at about 6.42am, a Pretoria biker made news when he was caught travelling at a speed of 284km/h on the R59 South near Kliprivier in Ekurhuleni.

When questioned by the authorities, the biker’s excuse for travelling at such speed was that he was late for a breakfast run.

The man was charged with reckless and negligent driving and was later released on a R1 000 bail.

At the time, no other offender had ever been caught travelling at such speed in the Ekurhuleni District.

Road accidents due to reckless driving have become disturbingly prevalent in South Africa.
