A star model in the making

“I began modelling at the age of six, after I told my mother I was interested in the field,” the nine-year-old model explained.

Her confidence, ability on the catwalk, natural beauty, plus her adorable smile and of course, hard work, could be a short summary of young Mariéla Romanelli’s success in pageantry.

In an exclusive interview with the Northsider we found out more about the reigning Little Miss South Africa 2020 as she spoke about her passion for modelling and where it all started.

“I began modelling at the age of six, after I told my mother I was interested in the field,” the nine-year-old model explained.

Her mother, a former model, did not stand in her way, instead, she guided her to the numerous crowns she’s clinched in her short career.

“My mother first taught me how to walk and to present myself as a model, and from there she signed me up with a modelling agency called HMC in Ruimsig,” she explained.

As young as she is, she already has ambitions of competing for the elite Miss South Africa and Miss Universe titles.

“When I’m older I see myself as Miss South Africa and Miss Universe,” she dreams.

She added that she never misses a single broadcast of either the Miss South Africa or the Miss Universe finalés. “I’ve been watching Miss SA and Miss Universe since I was little. My mother also tries to get us tickets to go and watch the event live, which is awesome,” a thankful Mariéla said.

She said she looks up to Miss SA 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who is also Miss Universe 2017, and Miss SA 2018 Tamaryn Green. She added that she admires the current Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi as well.

When not occupied with the glitz and glam of modelling, the youngster still has to be behind a desk and listening to a teacher in a Grade 3 class at The King’s School West Rand, where her schooling career is being moulded.

When asked how she juggles both worlds (modelling and school), she said she plans her schedules ahead. “I make sure school comes first and attended all my extra-murals. And when I have time, I attend my modelling classes,” she said.

Her busy programme doesn’t end there – Mariéla also plays golf and takes drama and dance classes – activities which she’s undoubtedly good at bearing in mind her big win at the RACA Eisteddfod 2019 Festival in Randfontein this year.
