Public urged to be cautious of protest action on Main Reef Road

Road cleared but public to remain cautious

Protest action flared up just outside the Roodepoort CBD this afternoon, 19 November. The protesters, alleged to be illegal miners, were reportedly throwing rocks at passing motorists on Main Reef Road.

Protesters were enraged when their illegal electricity connections were disconnected by authorities. Public order policing along with Roodepoort Police have been dispatched to the scene to establish order. Police spokesperson Captain Juanita-Anne Yorke confirmed as follows: “They are busy with operational deployment in the area and the road has been cleared”.

The road may have been cleared but the public are urged to be cautious of the area and to possibly consider alternative routes.
