Sanitary wear finds grateful recipients

Young disadvantaged girls struggle monthly with inadequate sanitary wear

Young humanitarian, Layla Mohamed, has kept her promise to donate over 100 female sanitary products on Friday, 18 October.

Layla and her family, in conjunction with Palesa Pads, delivered the sanitary products to the MCK Special School in Lenasia.

In a selfless gesture, Layla chose to use her 18th birthday as a vehicle for change by opting not to accept presents but instead asked for donations toward female sanitary wear. The lucky recipients of these donations are girls from the MCK Special School in Lenasia. Ruth Mohamed, Layla’s proud mother, said, “Seeing the faces of the girls and their appreciation for not just the gift but the care was priceless”.

Palesa Pads’ founder and CEO, Sheri de Wet, was also on hand to help deliver the special donation. Palesa Pads is an NPO which aims to alleviate the stress of young disadvantaged girls who may lack the resources to afford regular sanitary wear by providing them with a sustainable, reusable alternative. Sheri said, “These girls are at the mercy of their circumstance and we aim to provide a sustainable long-term option so that they can focus on their schooling. What Layla has done is amazing. It has been an absolute pleasure working with her and I hope to do so again in the future.”

The Mohameds have been so moved by the responses that they aim to formalise the project. “The experience was much more than we ever anticipated and the need is great out there,” said Ruth. “Lack of sanitary wear for young girls due to lack of means is an ongoing struggle and every initiative to help combat this is welcomed. One can never over-estimate the effect that kind-hearted gestures can have on those that really need them,” she added.
