A recycling integration system under way

The event was the first community talk with ARO and it seems that there are more in the pipeline

On the evening of Thursday, 24 October, the residents of Constantia Kloof Northside (CKN) held a closed community talk with the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) at Klein Constantia Boutique Guest House to discuss a recycling integration system in their area.

The initiative organiser, Lorin Leuci said, “We are in the process of integrating the recyclers (also known as waste pickers) and the residents. Residents of CKN are on a drive to improve their recycling efforts in a way that is truly community-orientated.”

The event was the first community talk with ARO and it seems that there are more in the pipeline, starting with a community clean-up day that will bring the recyclers and residents together.

Luyanda Hlatshwayo of ARO, who calls himself a proud reclaimer, addressed the meeting and shared his story and vision.

Luyanda said, ”Do not think that we are all uneducated; if you listen to our stories, you will find that some of us have a good educational background but have fallen on hard times.”

The residents of CKN are starting to work with the people who have been attempting to collect material of value from their bins for some time.

The integration process is already under way and taking form week by week, based on the actions taken.

Lorin said, “During the past four weeks, I have spent some time on bin day getting to know the recyclers in our area. We have 27 men on the register, and printed reflector vests and ID badges are being issued.
