Today in history: South African storyteller is born

Gcina is most famous for writing stories and music for children. Some of her work has been used in different schools and universities around the world.

South African storyteller, Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe, known as Gcina Mhlophe, was born on 24 October 1958 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Gcina is most famous for writing stories and music for children. Some of her work has been used in different schools and universities around the world.

In 1983 Gcina was a leading actress in a play called Umongikazi, which later toured to England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and she also appeared in the SABC television series called Gcina and Friends.

In 2010, she represented South Africa in Egypt for the Celebration of African Cultures.

Today her work plays a huge role in keeping history alive and encouraging children to read.
