Ward 70 does its part to clean up the community

Various community organisations and residents of Ward 70 were joined by their councillor, Caleb Finn, for a clean-up of Len Rutter Park.

On Saturday, 19 October, three clean-up projects were held in Roodepoort, one of them by Ward 70 community members.

The clean-up of Len Rutter Park in Florida was a huge success. It started at 8.30am and continued until well after 12 noon. Members of the Discovery Community Forum, Florida Issues Group, Florida Blockwatch, Flomotion, and ICE Community policing were joined by their ward councillor, Caleb Finn, for the clean-up.

Two six-ton trucks were filled and removed by Pikitup by the end of the day. The success was celebrated with ice-cold water and delicious boerewors rolls. Five hundred rubbish bags were donated for the clean-up and every one of them was filled with litter found throughout the park. The teams even found a fridge.

Community members, runners from the parkrun, and a group of hired workers braved the heat to do their part in keeping the community clean. All the water and food was donated by businesses and community members, which provided a reward for the hard work done during the day. Generous community members who could not attend helped with monetary donations to pay a wage for the hired workers and purchase food and water.

Despite the scorching heat and tiring work, morale was high at the park, with everyone enjoying the get-together and getting to know each other during the braai. The community members and workers who helped came forward after the clean-up to express their gratitude to the organisers for allowing them to be a part of the initiative.
