‘We are not scared of criminals’

Colonel Wilson Seshoka, the commander of the detective branch, reiterated to the residents that no police officers are intimidated by criminals.

Top management at Honeydew Police Station recently promised to address issues pertaining to crime during a Honeydew Sector 3 public engagement meeting.

The concerning state of crime in the area saw residents engage the police at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium conference room during a Honeydew Sector 3 public engagement meeting on 12 October.

It was brought to the attention of the station management that their officers were hanging out at drug houses, befriending criminals and were even scared to enter hot spots. They were also informed about the poor service at the Community Service Centre (CSC).

Colonel Johan Theunissen, the Honeydew Police Crime Prevention commander, immediately dismissed the notion that officers are scared, and encouraged residents to give them the names of the implicated officers so that they could deal with them.

Colonel Wilson Seshoka, the commander of the Detective Branch, reiterated to the residents that no police officer is intimidated by criminals. “There is no such thing that police officers are scared,” he assured. He advised residents to continue reporting crime, “Because if you are quiet, there is no way we will know about crime happening in your area”.

The acting station commander, Colonel Makgamatha, urged residents to hold them accountable. “We are your servants. Take photos and the registration numbers of the cars if you see police officers entering drug houses because we do have some rotten apples that we want to get rid of,” he explained.

He also vowed to improve the public’s experience when visiting the station. However, he reminded the residents that some services are hampered because they are on private land, which limits them from expanding their operations.

The Honeydew CPF chairperson, Obert Mlauzi concluded the meeting by appealing to residents to utilise the CPF structure to fight crime.
