Reminder of the fireworks by-laws for Diwali

Diwali is a beautiful and spectacular occasion, signifying the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The Festival of Lights will fall on 27 October this year.

Residents are reminded to take note of the fireworks by-laws during this time. The City of Johannesburg by-laws state that fireworks may only be used on certain occasions, Diwali being one of them. During Diwali, fireworks may only be used between 7pm and 10pm.

While it is a beautiful tradition, we also need to keep our furry friends in mind.

The loud fireworks are terrifying for a lot of animals, so pet owners are advised to visit their local veterinarian to prepare their animals for the noise.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your pet calm during fireworks:

• Walk them during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off

• Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks

• Put on some music or TV to mask the firework sounds

• Create a quiet space where your pet can feel in control

• Create some hiding places around your home

• Animals are often more stressed when they are outside during fireworks, so allow them to stay inside during those few hours

• Make sure your pets have collars with your contact details, or even better – microchips, in case they run away.
