Wilro Lions host Fifty Shades of Pink high tea for cancer

The Lions Club of Wilro Park recently held their annual Cancer Awareness event, which was attended by 100 women.

The event is held annually in memory of Lion Marlene Lepley, who lost her battle against cancer 10 years ago. The goal of the event was also a fundraiser, with the money raised destined to be donated to the Breast Health Foundation and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) West Rand.

The theme for this year’s high tea was ‘Fifty Shades of Pink’, with the venue and all the women decorated and dressed in every possible shade of pink.

The day started with Wilro Lions President, Ben Diederichs, who welcomed and thanked everyone for their attendance, as well as all other parties who organised the event. The guest speaker, Jenna Skews from the Breast Health Foundation, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at a very young age and is a survivor, explained to the women exactly how to do regular self-examinations and advised them to immediately see their doctor if there was any sign of lumps or changes in the appearance of their breasts.

Prayers and support also went out to one of the members, Karin Diederichs, who is currently fighting her battle. Niqula Kruger, Karin’s daughter, read a letter from her mother explaining the path she is walking and some of the questions we have but for which we don’t always have answers.

“We all know someone, a family member, a friend or a work colleague who is fighting cancer and this year was especially emotional as we support one of our very own members. Karin was diagnosed at the end of May and is currently undergoing treatment, we trust and believe that she will win this fight and be an inspiration to others,” said Sandy van Heerden, the Public Relations Officer for the Wilro Lions.

Everyone enjoyed a cold drink and some delicious food, while celebrating the lives of those who have fought, or are still fighting, the battle against cancer.
