Today in history: South African cricketer is born

In 1989 and 1995 he was selected as the South African Cricket Annual Cricketer of the Year.

Former South African cricketer, Fanie de Villiers, was born on 13 October 1964 in Vereeniging.

He started playing for the Northern Transvaal cricket team in 1985 and in the 1992/ 93 cricket season, he started his career for the South African team, playing in One-Day Internationals.

The following season, he made his test debut as a right-arm fast-medium bowler.

In 1989 and 1995 he was selected as the South African Cricket Annual Cricketer of the Year.

‘Vinnige Fanie’, as he is popularly known among cricket fans, retired in 1998, and has since worked as a cricket commentator.
