Investigation to determine JMPD officer’s future

The officer from region A (the Midrand area) is currently facing a murder charge after he opened fire on another motorist on 3 October.

The future of an off-duty Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer who recently allegedly shot and killed a motorist in Cosmo City, seems to be hanging in the balance.

JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, told Northsider that the officer’s fate will be determined by an investigation by both the police and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

The officer from region A (the Midrand area) is currently facing a murder charge after he opened fire on another motorist on 3 October.

“The incident occurred at approximately 7.15pm when the off-duty officer, who was driving a white VW Golf, made a U-turn and allegedly nearly collided with a blue Nissan Almera. The driver of the blue Almera chased behind the Golf, and words were exchanged. The occupants of the Almera allegedly tried to disarm the off-duty officer. The officer allegedly fired multiple shots at the Almera with his service pistol,” said Minnaar, describing the tragic incident.

The officer was then arrested by Honeydew Police. However, at this stage the Northsider cannot establish whether or not the officer is still behind bars, but he has appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court for a bail application on 8 October, where the case was postponed.

Ipid has been approached, and the Northsider is awaiting their comment.

This is a developing story.
