Florries takes silver for Patriarchy

Florries learner writes their drama team to the next level with a story

Hoërskool Florida participated in the Afrikaanse Taal- en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) Teen Drama competition for the first time in seven years with the production, Patriarchy, and won second place at the district final that was held at the Market Theatre in July.

The production is about the struggles that women endure in a patriarchal society, i.e. one run by males, and portrays the pain and abuse that women experience on a physical and emotional level. It is a multiracial, multilingual, physical theatre piece where spoken words and movement tell these stories.

Of the 220 productions that entered, Patriarchy, which was written and directed by a former student and a current Grade 12 learner, was one of the 18 productions that was invited to the ATKV Teen Drama National Finals which took place from 23 until 28 September, at the Adam Small Theatre in Stellenbosch.

Patriarchy was nominated as one of the best ensemble works, and Zama Shabalala, who played a role in the play, was nominated for the most promising role for a woman.
