Joburg Water’s planned infrastructure upgrade

Joburg Water is hoping to end the problem of blocked sewers with a pipe replacement costing R9 million by December.

The City of Johannesburg has recently announced that Johannesburg Water will have replaced 3,7km of sewer pipe by the end of December 2019.

The City said that this forms part of their Pipe Replacement Plan to refurbish ageing infrastructure. The open-trench and pipe-cracking methods will be used during the project, and will cost the City just over R9 million.

These replacements are part of CoJ’s goal to replace all the water and sewer infrastructure pipes with a remaining usefulness of fewer than two years across Johannesburg. The entire project will cost R2.8 billion to complete.

Over the past three years, 191km of water pipes and 99km of sewerage pipes have been replaced. Sewer pipes of 1 500km were also cleaned during the 2018/2019 financial year, an improvement from the 1 000km that was cleaned throughout the previous financial year.

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure, councillor Nico de Jager, said that this project is critical to ensure fewer blockages and bursts per kilometre. He has also urged residents to do their part in taking care of the sewer infrastructure by refraining from flushing or inserting foreign objects into the sewer network.
