Gate motor theft skyrockets in Honeydew

Residents are advised to apply extra measures to deter criminals.

Honeydew Police are appealing to residents with electric gates to safeguard their gate motors.

The spokesperson for the station, Captain Balan Muthan, told Northsider that the theft of gate motors has increased drastically. “This scourge has also been noticed by security companies who raised their concerns during a Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting,” he said.

He then suggested that residents apply extra measures to deter criminals.

As the most vital deterrent, EC Security reaction manager Norman Mphilo suggested that residents install a gate monitoring system, a device that can be linked to a security company’s monitoring system. “The device has a sensor on the gate and if the gate is tampered with, it sends a signal to the security provider who then responds to the incident,” he explained.

While most households make use of an anti-theft bracket that locks in the gate motor, Mphilo does not have much confidence in it, but agreed that to a certain extent, it prevents easy access to the gate motor. “I don’t know how secure it is but it seems to be making it difficult for criminals,” he said.

Also, he suggested off-site monitored cameras on properties with gate motors. “Cameras can help only if they are monitored. If they aren’t, the thieves will steal the gate motor and the owner of the property will review the footage much later,” he explained.
