Water restrictions reiterated after announcement of temporary shutdown

No water transfers to the Vaal River System will be possible for the next two months, due to the shutdown of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel system.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has released a notice appealing to all Gauteng water consumers to cut back on their water usage.

A shutdown of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel system began on 1 October and will remain in effect until 30 November. The tunnel system has been shut down for maintenance and inspection purposes and will need to be drained, making water transfers into the Vaal River System temporarily impossible. Although no interruptions to the water supply have been planned, making a conscious effort to significantly restrict water usage is a necessity.

According to Sputnik Ratau, the spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation, contingency measures have been put into place to ensure the continued supply of water to Gauteng consumers.

Level 1 water restrictions are still in place, but conservation efforts need to be made by all consumers.
