Crime contained in the month of August

Jacobs said, the suspects in these robberies ran out of luck when they broke into a police officer’s home. A gunfight ensued, leading to one of the suspects being wounded.

Despite two house robberies at properties on Peter Road, the Honeydew Sector 3 area had a relatively quiet August in terms of crime.

This was reported by the Honeydew Police Sector 3 manager, Captain Karen Jacobs, when she broke down the crime statistics during the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting on Wednesday, 11 September.

However, Jacobs said, the suspects in these robberies ran out of luck when they broke into a police officer’s home. A gunfight ensued, leading to one of the suspects being wounded.

“The suspect was shot in the knee, but his two accomplices managed to flee the scene,” she explained.

While people seem to think that most house break-ins are committed by locals, Jacobs dismissed the notion. In this case the suspects had come all the way from Diepsloot to commit crime in the Honeydew area.

In spite of this, Jacobs indicated that the number of house break-ins had dropped in the area, but she expressed concern about the recent increase in the incidents of theft, and theft out of motor vehicle. “These incidents mostly happen when people are at the gym and at takeaway restaurants – Fridays at 4pm being the favoured time,” she explained, also advising residents to change their gym schedules.

Prior to taking questions from the floor, the Captain appealed to residents to come out in numbers to next month’s sector public meeting.

These public meetings have been organised for all the sectors in Honeydew to discuss crime-related issues. Jacobs expressed her disappointment in the turnout at the first meeting held in Sector 1, which only about 60 people attended.

“We need people to bring their concerns to the table, so I’m asking everyone – from schools to shopping centres – to attend this meeting on 12 October at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium from 10am to noon,” she appealed.
