West Rand Toastmasters has another successful meeting

The West Rand Toastmasters aims to develop communication and leadership skills with the hope of improving self-confidence and personal growth in all who attend.

On 5 September, the West Rand Toastmasters held another well-attended meeting, which was called to order by their Sergeant-at-Arms, Jeffery Nkhwazi.

Toastmasters President, Lynette Harris, gave the welcoming remarks and apologies before the Toastmaster of the Evening, Max Kaan, took the stage. Max had selected the theme for the evening, ‘Flip your Blip’, and requested the role-players who attended to explain their ‘blips’ and how they would flip them. A blip is what we consider shortcomings for ourselves.

After Thato Majela, the Vice-President for Membership, introduced two of the guests (a new member and the West Rand Toastmasters Secretary) the Minutes from the previous meeting were read.

The toast to Toastmasters International was proposed by Ines Leal before Ernest Watkins, the evening’s Joke Master, left everyone in stitches with his clever joke about the world economy.

Alwyn van Wyngaarden chose the word for the evening, ‘astute,’ which was used several times by the members throughout the meeting. The impromptu speeches, led by Table Topics Master Lynnette Harris, were one of the many highlights of the evening.

Glen Campbell, the Vice-President for Public Relations, won the Money in the Pot that is used to raise funds for the club. Claude Joshua performed the role of Evaluation Chair for the meeting, and Malcolm Harris was an effective Time Keeper.

The four prepared speeches were informative and educational; covering topics such as claiming back your power, brain function, safety with electricity and the differences between being left- and right-handed.

The awards for the evening went to Max Kaan (Best Contributor), Thato Majela (Best Impromptu Speech), Jaqui Motaung (Best Prepared Speech) and, Claude Joshua (Best Evaluator).
