On this day in 1946 Queen vocalist, Freddie Mercury, was born

In 2019, Freddie would have turned 73.

On this day in 1946, vocalist and front man of the iconic rock group Queen, Freddie Mercury, was born.

The lead vocalist of the legendary rock group was born on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Born Frederick Bulsara, he spent a large portion of his childhood in India, where he attended school before moving to Middlesex, England with his family in 1964. After moving there, Freddie became the lead singer for a blues band called Wreckage, while studying at Ealing College of Art.

A fellow-student introduced Freddie to Brian May and Roger Taylor, who had founded a band called Smile. When the lead vocalist of Smile left the band, Freddie took over and subsequently renamed the band Queen. The final member, bassist John Deacon, joined in 1971 and the four men made Queen iconic together.

Freddie tragically died at the age of 45, on 24 November 1991, from bronchial pneumonia, resulting from AIDS. This was just one day after he publicly announced that he had the disease.

Freddie once said, “I am not going to be a star. I am going to be a legend.” That statement rang true; not only was Freddie a legend to his family and fans but to his friends and other music artists as well. He was even referred to as ‘King Mercury’ by Beatles legend, Paul McCartney.

A couple of other notable people born on 5 September are Kat Graham (Vampire Diaries actress) and Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice and All’s Fair).
