Today in History: South African swimmer Karen Muir breaks world record

Karen broke the 110 yard backstroke world record at the British Amateur Swimming Championships in Blackpool on 10 August, 1965.

Karen Muir, who was born in Kimberley on 16 September 1952, became the youngest world record holder in the history of organised sport at the tender age of 12 years.

She attended the Diamantveld High School, where she matriculated in 1970.

She was elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980 and after retiring from the sport, qualified as a doctor through the University of the Orange Free State and went into practice on the African continent.

Karen passed away on 1 April, 2013.
