Salvation came in the form of a soup kitchen

Among the people present at the soup kitchen were many unemployed South Africans who wake up every morning in pursuit of employment so that they can feed their families.

In the spirit of Mandela Month, the ANC branch in Ward 126, Weltevreden Park, came out on the morning of Friday, 26 July to hand out soup to the needy at Weltevreden Park Methodist Church and help them start the day with a full stomach.

Brian Clark from the church opened the proceedings with a prayer, read a verse from the Bible and briefly explained the business of the day.

Qhawe Zulu, the ANC branch coordinator said, “We thought it is a good initiative to come and assist in this programme. The ANC supporters within this ward need to know that we care for them and love them. In the spirit of Nelson Mandela, we thought it proper to involve ourselves in this community outreach programme.”

Ward 85 branch secretary, Lerato Mokoena, also attended the event and said, “The event today was a success, and giving hope to the people in the area is such a good feeling. This is not about politics or what political party you are affiliated with, but a true act of humanity to help the less fortunate”.

The Methodist Church soup kitchen is held every Monday and Friday at the Church and has been running successfully for 15 years with the help of a lot of community donations.

Jenny Matthee from the church said, “We were blessed by all our donations today and all the extra help is highly appreciated.”
