‘Bobby’ the baboon finally captured

Cora Bailey from the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) confirmed that the baboon was trapped in Krugersdorp on Sunday, 28 July.

Residents of Roodepoort no longer have to worry about unexpected visits from ‘Bobby’ the baboon, who has been roaming the area for weeks.

Cora Bailey from the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) confirmed that the baboon was trapped in Krugersdorp on Sunday, 28 July.

“We trapped him by using a special trap cage. He was taken to a rehabilitation centre where he is resting and eating well. He will be released in the wild, far away from people,” she said.

Bobby was initially sighted in the Constantia Kloof area, and efforts to trap him began, he moved around to different suburbs including Northcliff and Helderkruin.

Cora commended the community. “The community was lovely for keeping us posted. However, it was not an easy task to trap him since we could not predict his next move,” she said, adding that the weight of the trap cage made it even harder to set it up in time.

The appearance of a baboon in the area was nothing new. Last year the Northsider reported about another baboon that also roamed the Constantia Kloof area.

Cora said it is understandable that baboons are attracted to the area. “The houses on the ridges have actually been built in their territory. It’s only fair not to panic when they are in the suburbs because they are in their space,” she explained.

CLAW brings hope to impoverished communities where traditional veterinary services are often unavailable. The organisation is based in Durban Deep. For more information contact their centre on 082 926 3627.
