Bantubonke Harrington Holomisa was born on this day, 25 July, in 1955.

Popularly known as Bantu, he is a Member of the South African Parliament and the President of the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Born and bred in the Eastern Cape, he joined the Transkei Defence Force, where he rose to the rank of Brigadier.

In 1987, Holomisa became the Transkei’s head of government and that’s when Transkei was reintegrated into South Africa.

He was elected to the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1994, and has also served as the country’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism.

He was expelled from the ANC in 1996, after he testified before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), about irregular activities in the Transkei. He refused to retract his testimony, arguing that what he had said was of historical knowledge to all concerned.

Homolisa and the UDM supported a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma on several occasions.
