Assistance needed to fund young boy’s education

Michelle also added that if any reader has been in a similar situation, she would appreciate their advice.

The mother of 10-year-old Connor Kirsten, who has been diagnosed with high spectrum autism, is appealing for donations in order to enrol him at a suitable school.

Connor is currently enrolled at Lantern School, in Grade 4, but his mother, Michelle, has apparently been told it is not the appropriate school for him.

“He was finally diagnosed with autism on Tuesday, 16 July, as we were struggling to raise funds to take him to a child psychiatrist. He has been to neurologists and a normal psychologist and so on. I was only able to get him to do proper tests now. Connor is basically like Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory. There are schools available but they are incredibly expensive,” said Michelle.

According to her, there is a particular school that is willing to help him out with a bursary but she still cannot afford the other essentials. The school is Learn Write, which is based in Constantia Kloof.

“Government schools do not fully cater for his needs. They do not have the facilities to help him. My biggest fear is that if we do not put him in a school that will deal with his specific needs and abilities, my bright boy will end up in a position where he will be frustrated, bored and most of all, not ready for his adult life,” said Michelle.

Michelle also added that if any reader has been in a similar situation, she would appreciate their advice.

“Anyone who wants to donate or offer support, can contact me on 079 778 4365 or email me at Mixkirsten@hotmail.co.za,” she said.
