More volunteers needed for patrols

The project has grown in numbers over the years; however, the leader of the project and public relations officer for the CPF, Jon Rosenberg, still encourages people to join them and beef up the project.

Three years ago, the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) launched a volunteer patrol project, an initiative which was meant to help the police with patrolling part of the policing precinct.

The project has grown in numbers over the years; however, the leader of the project and public relations officer for the CPF, Jon Rosenberg, still encourages people to join them and beef up the project.

“The patroller initiative is important. We started three years ago and now have 30 patrollers. We meet on a weekly basis, and run an eyes and ears initiative during which we drive up and down – increasing visibility in the area to assist the police who do not have enough manpower,” said Rosenberg as he described the gist of the patroller initiative.

Besides being eyes and ears for the community, Rosenberg said they also respond to and assist with accidents. “We do a lot of work in terms of motor accidents, unfortunately. We assist at scenes by doing traffic calming and setting up road closures for choppers and emergency services,” he explained.

Rosenberg said he wants to strengthen the initiative. “We’ve had our ups and down with patroller numbers, and currently have 30, who are supposed to cover Sectors 1, 2 and 3, which they simply cannot do properly,” he said. “My goal is to create sector captains in each sector. They will report to me and only work in their assigned sector instead of trying to cover the whole area, which is an impossible task,” he explained.
