Assistance needed to feed the homeless

The problem of homelessness will never just go away; it's a reality that will always exist.

The Greymont Salvage Shop, supported by the Woman of West Rand (WOW), has sent out a plea for donations to assist with their soup kitchen. The shop’s mission is to provide people who are in need with the basic needs to stay alive and make them feel worthy.

Debbie Ingram, one of the founders of the shop, said the soup kitchen, which they have on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, was started about six months ago because they noted the number of homeless people increasing and they could not just sit by and do nothing.

“It is known that even people with an income find it a challenge to survive and have enough money to eat properly, and that people who are homeless battle to find enough food to eat. Beggars and homeless people have specific needs, which differ from those of people living on social grants. Many homeless individuals battle to access these services because they don’t have proof of address or identity documents, and lack the necessary financial support,” said Debbie.

She went on to say that the problem of homelessness will never just go away; it’s a reality that will always exist.

“We are not enabling these members of the community; we are trying to be humane and provide them with a hot cooked meal, clean clothing, a blanket and, when they really need it, basic medical care. We try and provide them with what we have,” she said.

The shop is in need of gas for cooking, coffee, sugar, milk powder, and medical supplies like bandages, plasters, antiseptic liquid and ointments.

Debbie said meat and fruit/ vegetables are also very welcome as they make it possible to provide the needy with nutritious meals.

“Basic toiletries, disposable cups, and eating utensils are also needed. Anyone willing to make a donation will find us at the Greymont Salvage Shop, 4 West Road, Greymont,” she added, “or can contact Debbie on 072 974 9123 or Ronel on 073 826 9661.”

Special thanks was given to Mission of Mercy and WOW for their much valued contributions.
