JMPD plans to remove rock that attracts vagrants

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department ward commander, Wandile Mrubata, who identified the reason for the problem, believes that if the rock is removed, the vagrants will stay away from the area.

The rock on the open land adjacent to a property wall on the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Mulder Street in Constantia Kloof is believed to be the reason for vagrants’ regular, unpleasant visits to the spot.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department ward commander, Wandile Mrubata, who identified the reason for the problem, believes that if the rock is removed, the vagrants will stay away from the area.

An aggrieved property owner recently reported the activities to JMPD after she failed to get rid of the vagrants. She was complaining about their making fire there every night, cooking, drinking alcohol and using the spot as a toilet.

She described the piece of land as an eyesore and a health hazard to her family.

She also complained that her gate motor had been tampered with, for which she believed the very same people on the land next to her property were to blame.

Following a visit by JMPD, Mrubata said they have to remove the rock, which will be no small feat. “It’s going to be quite a process to remove it – even a TLB won’t be able to do it because the rock is rooted in the ground. We will have to ask the Johannesburg Roads Agency to come out and do an inspection,” he said.
