On this day in 1967, a South African football manager was born.

Steve Komphela, who celebrates his birthday on 1 July, is the former manager of Maritzburg United, and former coach of Kaizer Chiefs. He is currently coaching the Golden Arrows.

Steve began his coaching career with Manning Rangers FC in 2002, and since then, has coached several clubs.

He became a teacher after he got his teacher’s diploma at Tshiya College in the Free State.

He was also a TV presenter and hosted his own talk show on television channel Çanakkale Dardanelspor AS where he sang Turkish folk songs and told jokes.

He was born in Golden Valley, just outside Kroonstad.

Komphela started out at NSL Second Division side, Klerksdorp City, and then moved to Qwa Qwa Stars where he earned a promotion to the National Soccer League.

He made his NSL debut in 1986. He then helped his team to a third place finish in the league and was voted the NSL Players’ Player of the Year.

He later joined Kaizer Chiefs where he played all 34 league games and signed a contract overseas.
