Latest technology used to trace suspects

If residents see anything suspicious, they can call APCAN on 011 472 0770/1 for assistance.

APCAN Security has urged motorists to be aware of suspicious vehicles that follow them from work, malls or any other place.

They are appealing to motorists who notice a suspicious vehicle not to drive directly to their homes; they should make a couple of extra turns or go to the police station.

This comes after a driveway hijacking that took place in the Florida Hills area recently.

According to a Facebook post by the APCAN Security group, they received a phone call from a client, reporting a hijacking in which both the owner and his vehicle were taken.

The post read, “With the help of the community forums, Help 24, Police, Vumacam and various other parties, a location from the owner’s phone was pinged in the Diepkloof area. On arrival at the location, only the phone was found.”

It further stated that the owner of the vehicle was picked up at Lenasia South Police Station.

In a separate incident, APCAN followed up on a complaint from a client whose trailer was stolen. The complainant contacted the control room and reported the times that the criminals travelled on specific roads.

According to another post by APCAN, after receiving the information, they sent out an investigation unit to patrol the streets that were named at those specific times.

“Using the Vumacam system and various algorithms, an investigation was done to see the patterns of travel of this specific vehicle. On the morning of 21 June, the APCAN/ Vuma cameras spotted the wanted vehicle and began the pursuit. Two suspects were arrested,” read the post.

“Implementing the Vumacam cameras in the community has given APCAN a platform to pursue cases like this and use the technology to our advantage. Thank you to the community and our clients for making this possible,” concluded the post.
