Dreams come true for young graduate

"It was more than a bursary, it provided me with a personal support system that got me through university."

Paula Hopetown, who is from humble beginnings in Florida, and always focused on being involved in leadership and academics is now a Cell C bursary fund graduate.

The Cell C Girl Child Bursary Fund, in partnership with the Tomorrow Trust, is a financial resource that invests in the tertiary education of disadvantaged young women, and Paula is one of them!

“I enjoy participating in community service at various Tomorrow Trust schools, teaching the under-privileged and giving back in any way. Being part of a volunteer programme has given me a different perspective on life which makes me appreciate what I am and where I am,” said Paula.

When asked how she found out about the Trust, she said, “During my matric year, 2010, at Florida Park High School, I was facing a major problem that many matriculants still face today. I had dreams of studying further but I didn’t have the financial means to do so. I first came across an NGO called Tomorrow Trust, which aimed at making a meaningful and a sustainable impact on the lives of youth through education and holistic support.”

She said the fund changed her life and has been a major stepping stone.

“Not only did I receive financial support for my studies, Cell C was with me every step of the way. It was more than a bursary, it provided me with a personal support system that got me through university,” she said.

Paula participated in a mentorship programme whereby she was mentored and supported by someone she looks up to. She added that students require a strong motivational support system, in order to be guided and to realise their true potential, because it’s at this point where people make choices that will last them until eternity.

“Being a graduate feels amazing. It feels amazing to achieve something that you’ve worked so hard for. It affirms the initial dream that every student has when they commence their studies. Dreams do become reality and we all have the ability to achieve our dreams,” she concluded.
